Many times a simple in office whitening treatment is all you need to rejuvenate your smile. Everyone enjoys feeling of seeing a bright, white smile. Teeth whitening has become the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedure offered. Whitening treatments performed in your dentist’s office present almost instant gratification. A comfortable hour in your dentist chair and years of stain and yellowing vanish. Everyone enjoys the rejuvenating effects of a bright, white smile. The procedure is quick and effective and most patients are amazed at the results. A common question after treatment is, “how long does it last?” The answer is, “with a few steps and maintenance on your part, forever.”
Before deciding whether Zoom in-office teeth whitening is right for you, your dental hygienist and Dr. David Zelby will conduct a comprehensive examination of your teeth and gums to ensure proper health, as well as talk with you about your oral hygiene and lifestyle habits to determine if you will benefit from whitening. This will help you and your dentist agree on the whitening product or technique that’s best for you. While most patients have no sensitivity people with extreme tooth sensitivity may feel small nerve pains a few hours after treatment. These little zings will go away in a few hours and should not cause any alarm. If you have extremely sensitive teeth talk to your dentist or hygienist before the procedure. We have a variety of desensitizing treatments to be used before and after the procedure. Most people exhibit no sensitivity but, for those of you who do.. relax, we have everything you need to make sure your teeth can be as white as possible with no problem at all.
Your dentist also may require you to undergo tooth whitening if you are planning other cosmetic dental procedures, such as veneers or composite bonding, to ensure a better match between the restoration and your natural dentition, or after the removal of braces. Depending on the condition of your teeth and your goals for changing the look of your smile, tooth whitening may not be your best option.
During your consultation and evaluation Dr. Zelby also, will note existing dental work, such as dental crowns and veneers, which will not respond to conventional whitening agents. These issues will be discussed and addressed before your Whitening appointment. In our office we recommend that two weeks before your whitening treatment that you use a desensitizing tooth paste to minimize any sensitivity that may occur immediately after treatment.
The complete procedure takes less than an hour, but a regular teeth cleaning is recommended prior to the actual Zoom teeth whitening session.
The procedure begins with a short preparation to cover the lips and gums, leaving the teeth exposed. One of our doctors or dental assistants then applies the Zoom hydrogen peroxide whitening gel, which works together with the Zoom light to penetrate the teeth and break up the stains and discoloration.
The gel remains in place for 15 minutes while the light is activated. During this time, you can relax, read a magazine and listen to music. Our assistants will watch your progress and make sure you are comfortable during the entire procedure.
The gel is applied for three 15-minute sessions of light activation, for a total treatment time of 45 minutes.
Immediately afterwards, a sensitivity-reducing fluoride paste-gel is applied to the teeth.
You will be given a Zoom home-use touch-up kit that includes custom-fitted whitening trays. This is a complimentary gift to you from our office, free of charge. We also, would like to assist you as you maintain your new bright smile. At every scheduled dental hygiene appointment you will be given two free applications of whitening gel. Used once or twice a month (or per the recommendation of your dental hygienist) for a few hours and your teeth will stay white for life! Follow Dr. Zelby’s and your dental hygienist’s instructions for when and how to use this touch-up kit.
To help maintain the whitening effects of your Zoom teeth whitening treatment it is may advises that you avoid certain foods and beverages, or consume them in moderation to avoid staining your teeth. This includes tea, coffee, red wine, cola, etc.
Additionally, tobacco products will stain teeth, even after whitening treatments. As such, your dentist will suggest you quit using them. Maintain an appropriate oral hygiene (brushing and flossing) regimen to prevent stains from reforming, and see your dentist and hygienist regularly for scheduled teeth cleanings.
Toothpaste containing whitening agents may be suggested by your dentist to maintain the results of the procedure.
