Gum disease (periodontitis) is something that affects roughly 47% of Americans 30 years of age and over. Yet with that many people suffering from it, many still do not take the time and attention needed for good oral hygiene habits. Gum disease is one of the leading causes of premature tooth loss, so it’s important to be aware of what you’re facing if you have sensitive or bleeding gums.
Causes of Gum Disease
Plaque is a sticky film that forms on the teeth and has millions of bacteria within it. It is easily cleaned away by brushing and flossing, but if left on the teeth too long, it can lead to gingivitis. When gingivitis is not treated, it can advance into periodontal disease. Active periodontitis will cause gum and bone recession and eventually tooth loss.
Foods That Contribute to Gum Disease
There are certain foods which can contribute to gum disease or raise your chances of oral infections. Things like processed carbohydrates, sodas, fruit juices, and sports drinks can be harmful because of the acidity and sugar. Starchy foods also break down into sugar, and things like pasta and white bread can get lodged in between teeth and cause bacteria to multiply. The more plaque there is, the more likely you are to get gingivitis. And if gingivitis isn’t reversed, it eventually becomes gum disease.
