A dental implant is a titanium post that’s inserted into the bone and recreates the root of your tooth. In order for your implant to be successful, there needs to be enough bone to support it.
During your initial implant consultation in Atlanta, we’ll take a few x-rays to determine the amount and quality of your existing bone. Occasionally, prior to having an implant placed, some people will have to go through a procedure known as a bone graft.
What Is Bone Grafting?
A bone graft is where we place donor bone into your planned implant location.
Who Needs Bone Grafting?
If your initial evaluation determines that you don’t have enough bone where you want to get an implant, then we may need to place a bone graft in the area to get a better foundation.
Another scenario in which we would do a bone graft is if you have a multi-rooted tooth like a molar that’s going to be replaced. First, we would remove the tooth, then place donor bone in the empty sockets to increase bone quality and minimize resorption.
What Happens After A Bone Graft Procedure?
After having a bone graft placed, your body will do the rest to prep the area for an implant. Over the course of about three months, the new bone will integrate with your jaw.
