The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) inside of your jaw can become inflamed and cause pain. When this occurs, there are a few treatment options available to try.
Rehabilitation
If your jaw pain was triggered by something like eating certain foods, then rest or physical therapy on the joint can help alleviate your discomfort. Avoiding hard, crunchy foods, or bubble gum will allow the TMJ to heal. In addition, you can massage the area, or apply warm, moist heat or a cold compress.
Medication
If your jaw pain occurs occasionally, our Atlanta dentist can give you medication that will help. Taking an anti-inflammatory, along with a muscle relaxer for a few days, will relieve your problem.
Occlusal Guard
Most patients that have regular problems with jaw pain will clench and grind their teeth in their sleep, making them look worn down, jagged, and sharp.
If you know, or if our Atlanta dentist suspects that you’re grinding and clenching, then we can make a nightguard for you to wear. This acrylic device fits over your top and bottom teeth, preventing you from meeting them together and causing damage.
Surgery
With some patients, the jaw joint itself is the actual problem. There could be bone spurs, adhesions, or even tumors present. In this case, we’ll recommend surgery to have them removed.
